hmmmm

here's a question for you:

the gospel offers so much happiness and is so tender. why, in the scriptures, do they not focus more on that? i feel like they are always just preaching repentance, almost harshly. why do you think that is? do you think it's just a difference in culture in the times we live? any responses would be appreciated. thanks much.

Well, of course this is my opinion, the people are not able to enjoy the "tenderness" of the gospel if they're not living it. You can't enjoy a turkey sandwich unless you make it first. So, while everyone is sitting around wondering while they're still hungry, the prophet has to come over and tell them how to be filled- make yourself a dang quesadilla.. I mean, turkey sandwich. Yeah, that's right, I just compared the gospel to a turkey sandwich.
I'm so glad that I found your blog. I will be sure to come read often.

It seems to me that the scriptures and the prophets focus on the path to happiness through preaching repentance. The gospel of Jesus Christ, and every commandment given and covenant made, is divinely calculated to bring about our happiness (see note 1 in Elder Christofferson's talk from the most recent conference), and to help strengthen, sanctify and exalt us. To me, that is evidence of a loving Father in Heaven. Repenting, and experiencing the associated love and change, should supply a personal witness of God's tenderness and yield happiness. As for the harsh delivery, well, I guess that is just a father caring enough to try to help some mighty stubborn children get the message that He so desperately wants us to receive...because He cares and it will help us live happily ever after.

You are pretty cool Logan. I know exactly what you mean about missionary work. It is really refreshing to be able to participate in it again. See you in August.
